Ernest Hemingway's war story "A Farewell To Arms" tells the story of how an American expatriate soldier fell in love with an English nurse during war times. And how their relationship blossomed but then have a tragic ending.

The hero of the story Lieutenant Frederic Henry was serving under the Italian Army during the Italian campaign of World War I. He is also the narrator of the story, giving a first person point of view. Hemingway's heroes all normally have a casual approach in their characters, including this one. In Book 9/ chapter 9, we find our narrator telling us about the casual behavior of the men with him, including the major. They had been drinking and passing around the alcohol, at the same time asking when the attack was supposed to happen. This casual approach to the issue of war shows how the heroes or characters are shown to exhibit grace even during times of pressure, like wars.
