What is Texas legislature?

• The state legislature of the US state of Texas is called the Texas Legislature. It is a bicameral body with a 150-member House of Representatives and a 31-member Senate. At the Capitol in Austin, the Texas legislature convenes. In addition to its strong constitutional ties to the Lieutenant Governor of Texas and its influence over and direction of state government's actions, it is a potent branch of Texas government thanks to the state's plural executive.
• Since Texas's admission to the Union in 1845, the Legislature has been the Republic of Texas's legally recognized successor to the Congress. The first regular session of the legislature took place from February 16 to May 13, 1846.
• Every odd-numbered year, on the second Tuesday of January, the Texas Legislature holds its regular session. The regular session is limited to 140 days under the Texas Constitution. The Speaker of the House is chosen by the members of the Senate, which is presided over by the lieutenant governor, who is elected independently from the governor on a statewide basis. Both have a great deal of discretion when selecting members for their respective houses' committees, and thus have a significant influence on state legislation.
