Iridium is rare in the earth's crust but ample in meteorites, the Alvarez group took the presence of the element at the k-T boundary as evidence that the impact of a huge meteorite led to the death of the dinosaurs.

A meteorite is a solid piece of debris from an object, inclusive of a comet, asteroid, or meteoroid, that originates in the outer area and survives its passage through the atmosphere to attain the surface of a planet or moon.

A meteorite is any fairly small natural object from interplanetary space—i.e., a meteoroid—that survives its passage through Earth's environment and lands on the surface. In current usage, the time period is broadly applied to comparable objects that land on the surface of different comparatively large bodies.
