The story of the Genain sisters has long been cited as evidence proving something about the supposed hereditary nature of schizophrenia

Identical quadruplet sisters make up the Genain quadruplets. All four of them went on to acquire schizophrenia, indicating that the disease has a strong genetic component. The Genain sisters all experienced nervous breakdowns one after another, and at least two of them were hospitalised and given electroshock "treatment" over the course of numerous sessions.

By the time they were 24, all four of the sisters had developed schizophrenia. In Mr. Genain's family, there was a history of mental illness, which may have been evidence that heredity and mental illness are related, or it may have simply been a dysfunctional and abusive family without any special genetic component. In her late teens, Mr. Genain's mother experienced a three-year psychological breakdown.
