The meaning behind that simile is that ‘they’ are getting tons of gold like they were corn grains which if you’ve seen them, there’s a lot in just one corn. So basically those people were getting a lot of gold.

It also says that the woman doesn't understand "how plants could draw [him] to these awful places". Because the woman doesn't understand his fascination with the bog, it's clear that she isn't interested in the bog and doesn't admire its intense dangers and true treasures.
