When one examines the current state of knowledge regarding genetics and life experience effects on brain structure and function, the best overall conclusion is that most psychological disorders are the result of both biological and psychosocial factors.

A persistent dysfunctional pattern of thinking, emotion, and behaviour that causes great distress and is viewed as abnormal in that person's culture or society is referred to as a psychological disorder. These disturbances must reflect some kind of dysfunction (biological, psychological, or development).

Genetics, foetal harm, infections, toxin exposure, brain traumas or damage, and substance use are examples of biological influences [citation needed]. Many experts think that the biology of the brain and nerve system is what causes mental problems.
