William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was an American sociologist, socialist, historian, and Pan-Africanist civil rights campaigner.
He was born on February 23, 1868, and he passed away on August 27, 1963.
Du Bois, who was raised in a largely accepting and integrated community while growing up in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, completed his graduate work at Harvard University, where he became the first African American to receive a doctorate, and after becoming a professor of history, sociology, and economics at Atlanta University.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in 1909, and Du Bois was one of its founders.
Prior to this, Du Bois had gained national notoriety as the figurehead of the African-American activists known as the Niagara Movement, who fought for equal rights for black people.
Du Bois and his followers criticized the Booker T. Washington-drafted Atlanta Compromise, which called for Southern Blacks to work and submit to White Political Rule in exchange for Southern Whites' assurance that Blacks would have access to fundamental educational and economic possibilities.
