How long was each sprinkler used is 30 hours.

How long was each sprinkler used

Let x represent how long each sprinkler was used

Hence:

40(x)+15(55-x)=1575

40x+825-15x=1575

Collect like terms

40x+-15x=1575-825

25x=750

Divide both side by 25x

x=750/25

x=30 hours

Therefore the Jenkins used the sprinklers for 30 hours while Green's used it for 25.

The complete question is:

The Jenkins family and the Moore family each used their sprinklers last summer. The water output rate for the Jenkins family's sprinkler was 40l per hour. The water output rate for the Moore family's sprinkler was per 15l hour. The families used their sprinklers for a combined total of 55 hours, resulting in a total water output 1575 of .
