Some of the reasons why a word with multiple connotations could become a problem in academic discourse are:

 • It could lead to confusion
 • There is always the danger of ambiguity. For example, a word that means one thing can mean another which is totally different from the intended meaning.

What is a Connotation?

This refers to the implied meaning of a word that is different from the dictionary meaning of the word.

Hence, we can see that when making a debate or an academic discourse, it is important to use words with fewer connotations as they would be easier to understand, without the confusion.
