We can actually deduce here that the literary term that this quote, "The poor old van tumbled over and over by the wind, like a dustbin blown across a backyard. I'd see it in the rushing dark, crashing down the hill, doors buckling and windows gone" is: Simile.

What is simile?

Simile is actually known to be a figure of speech that is used to compare two things that dissimilar but similar in a way. Another literary device used in comparison is metaphor. In simile, "as" or "like" are usually used to portray the comparison.

We see here that in the quote, the tumbling of the poor old van that is caused by the blowing of the wind is compared to a dustbin that is blown across a backyard. The word "like" is used in the comparison.

Thus, the literary term is simile.
