Because of the canal's ease of transit, the area surrounding it would be practically totally industrialized. The area's demographics would also change, since it had a very low population at the time. The construction of the canal would result in a dramatic increase in the population.

These changes were well-represented in Porter's view. Because he believed they would have a significant impact on the U.S. economy, Porter pushed for these reforms. In addition, he admired the canal's potential to improve the lives of those who use it.
