Although the mantle can flow, it does so very slowly. Hence it takes some time to adjust to any change, like the melting of the

The Earth's surface sinks so low as a result of the creation of ice sheets that when the ice melts, neither the crust nor the mantle recover.

This is based on the concept of isostasy.

What is the concept of isostasy ?

 • The asthenosphere, a region of the upper mantle made up of weak, plastic rock that is located about 110 km (70 miles) below the surface, is the ideal theoretical balance of all large portions of the Earth's lithosphere as though they were floating on the denser underlying layer. This state is known as isostasy.
 • According to the densities of the underlying rocks, isostasy regulates the regional heights of continents and ocean floors.
 • Everywhere on Earth, identical weights are ascribed to hypothetical columns with equal cross-sectional area rising from the asthenosphere to the surface, despite the fact that their components and the altitudes of their upper surfaces varied greatly.
