A specific index made up of two or more columns. Key column values are combined to create a single value. The index's name has to be distinctive (not the same as a column of the table).

How is the NASDAQ composite index calculated?

All common type equities with domestic and foreign bases that are listed on The NASDAQ Stock Market are included in the NASDAQ Composite Index. A broad-based index, the NASDAQ Composite Index.

 • Applying the market capitalization weighting algorithm yields the answer.
 • This suggests that the largest companies listed on this exchange have the greatest impact on the final value of the index.
 • The total share weights of all the exchange-traded securities are multiplied by the corresponding closing prices to produce the index.
 • The result is multiplied by an index divisor to get a number that is more appropriate for reporting.
 • Each trading day's final confirmed value for the NASDAQ index is calculated at 4:16 p.m. Eastern Time. Every second, the composite updates the NASDAQ index.

Now, How to maintain the Index

 • changes in the index or pricing On the ex-date, shares affected by corporate events including stock dividends, stock splits, and some spin-offs and rights issuances are adjusted.
 • The Index is typically updated on the evening before the corporate action's effective date or as soon as practically possible following any change in the total shares outstanding2 as a result of other corporate actions, such as secondary offers, stock repurchases, conversions, and acquisitions.
 • In the case of a special cash dividend, a determination is made on an individual basis whether to make a change to the price of an Index Security in accordance with its Index dividend policy. If it is determined that a change will be made, it will become effective on the ex-date.
 • If at any time during the year an Index Security no longer meets the Eligibility Criteria, or is otherwise determined to have become ineligible for continued inclusion in the Index, the security is removed from the Index.
 • A security will typically be eliminated from the Index at its last sale price. The Index Security may, at NASDAQ's discretion, be withdrawn at a zero price if, however, it is suspended from trading at the time of its removal on its principal listing exchange and an official closing price cannot be easily ascertained.
 • After the market closes but before the official closing value of the Index is released, which is typically at 17:16:00 ET as I said before, the Index Security will receive the zero price.
 • To prevent any discontinuity in the value of the Index that might otherwise be brought on by any such change, the divisor is typically adjusted whenever there is a change in the Index Shares, an Index Security, or a change to the price of an Index Security as a result of spin-offs, rights issuances, or special cash dividends.

Thank you,

Eddie
