This refers to the set of test taken by students before a new unit to find out what the students need more instruction on and what they may already know.

These tests are designed to evaluate students’ understanding of material before teaching begins and its could cover content from prior grades, re-evaluate grade-level content from earlier in the year or preview grade-level material.

The role performed by pre-assessment are:

  • to give the teachers a picture of their students’ needs so they can better plan lessons to meet those needs
  • to create a baseline for students’ growth for the year
