Answer: The main conflict in the story is that the daughter wanted to be independent while the mother's desire was for obedience.

Both the mother and the daughter had different contrasting cultural perspectives. The daughter grew up in the United States and as a result of desired to be independent and be able to make her own decisions.

The mother was however from a Chinese origin and believed in obedience shown by children to their parents.

These differences lead to conflicts between the mother and daughter.
