The 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea was one the sources of information used by the Philippines and China in their perspective claims of sovereignty over the Scarborough Shoal.

What was the Scarborough Shoal?

This standoff refers to the tensions between the Republic of the Philippines and the People's Republic of China over the disputed Scarborough Shoal.

These tensions began in 2012 after the attempted apprehension by the Philippine Navy of eight mainland Chinese fishing vessels near the shoal.

The 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea is a primary sources of information because it is the actual laws and rules issued by governing bodies that tell us what we can and cannot do.

By virtues of this, the china claimed all the islands, reefs and shoals within a U-shaped line in the South China Sea drawn in 1947 as its territory and further asserted its claim shortly after the departure of the US Navy force from Subic, Zambales, Philippines.
