So much of life is ambiguous and uncertain, but regrets are pretty distinct. When you look back and like things haven’t gone as you’d expected, regret sets in–but it often attaches to something specific.

Many of the problems you regret relate to explicit choices you made. More often than not, those decisions fall into one of three categories, and comprehending what those are can help you avoid making choices that’ll leave you regarding regretful in the first place.

Why do we regret our decisions?

Simply put, we mourn the choices we make, because we worry that we should have created other choices. We think we should have done something better but didn't. We should have picked a better mate, but didn't. We should have taken that more thrilling but risky job, but didn't.

The reason why shame feels so awful is because, by its nature, it suggests that there is something you could have done, some choice you could have made, or some action you might have taken that would have made something good transpire or avoided something terrible.
