Os animais herbívoros apresentam características que auxiliam na captação desse alimento bem como no seu processo de digestão. Nos vertebrados, por exemplo, observa-se a presença de dentes adaptados à trituração do vegetal e um sistema digestório rico em bactérias que atuam promovendo a digestão da celulose.
