George and Lennie have been friends since they were young and like spending time together whenever possible. When asked by Slim about their shared background, George reveals.
"Him and me was both born in Auburn. I knowed his Aunt Clara. She took him in when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out workin’. Got kinda used to each other after a little while." In spite of the difficulties posed by Lennie, George assures Slim that their relationship is for the better.
