The "Mother of Social Work" and proponent of social welfare, Jane Addams, worked to bring the European settlement movement to the United States. She fought for world peace and was a significant figure in the history of social work and women's suffrage in the United States.

Addams collaborated with labor and other women organizations to solve number of social problems, including the establishment of the first juvenile court statute, tenement home regulations, an eight-hour workday for women, factory inspections, and workers' compensation.
