A small number of individuals migrated west to try to colonize the Great Plains. The Plains were officially Indian territory, the property was expensive to purchase, and anyone wishing to travel west faced an extended, perilous, and painful trek, which deterred them.

What is the Great Plains?

A significant physiographic province of North America is the Great Plains, commonly known as the Great American Desert. The Rio Grande in the south, the Mackenzie River delta at the Arctic Ocean in the north, the Interior Lowland and the Canadian Shield in the east, and the Rocky Mountains in the west make up the Great Plains.

They span 3,000 miles (4,800 km) in length, 300 to 700 miles in breadth, and 1,125,000 square miles (2,900,000 square km) in area, which is about equal to one-third of the United States. The Great Plains proper include parts of 10 U.S. states (Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico), three Canadian Prairie Provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), and the Northwest Territories.
