Those who supported the free silver movement believed that it would be easier for debtors to pay their creditors.

The Free Silver Movement promoted unlimited silver coinage in late 19th-century American history. An act of Congress passed in 1873 that left the silver dollar off of the list of acceptable coins served as the catalyst for the movement.

Owners of silver mines in the West, farmers who thought a more plentiful currency would increase the price of their crops, and debtors who hoped it would make it easier for them to pay off their debts were among those who supported free silver.

For sincere believers, the majority of Americans, silver came to represent economic fairness.
