This is a map of New York from 1842. The map shows a scale stating that one inch equals 1000 feet and the island is approximatel

y 10 inches across. Manhattan is in the middle of the map and is surrounded almost entirely by water. The Hudson River is on the left and the Eastern River is along the bottom and on the right. Brooklyn is visible, across the East River. A legend is shown on the right side of the map, listing churches, banks, public buildings, and museums. The more populated areas are near the shore.
This map supports the idea that urbanization

is not a process that humans have any means to control
led to more Americans who preferred city living in the 1800s
did not begin in the United States until after the end of the 1800s
was more likely to occur near water for transport and energy needs

Based on the map of New York City in 1842, the supported idea about urbanization was that was more likely to occur near water for transport and energy needs.

Why does urbanization often start by the shore?

Urbanization often starts by the coastline or near the shore because people use the water for commercial activities which drive development. They use the water for transportation of goods and services by boats, and for energy as well as food for instance by fishing and through irrigation.

This was one of the reasons why New York became a major city. Thanks to its connection to the Atlantic Ocean, it became a major port that brought in goods from outside the country and also took goods from the country out. This was made even more effective when the Eerie canal was built to link New York to the Great Lakes.

The statement below was made by an American businessman in 1897.
uranmaximum [27]

The statement made by the American businessman showed that American imperialism was mainly economically motivated.

Americans engaged in imperialism which is the acquisition of physical or economic control of other nations because:

 • They wanted raw materials that they could process
 • They wanted new markets to sell their processed goods

As a result, the U.S. acquired certain nations such as the Philippines and Hawaii as well as bases in China and Japan in order to accomplish these economic goals.

In conclusion, American imperialism was driven by economic gain.
