As Annie Londonderry, Annie Cohen Kopchovsky (1870–11 November 1947), a Jewish immigrant from Latvia to the United States, rode a bicycle across the globe for the first time in 1894–1895.

Because it made the plot credible and compelling, Jamaica Kincaid's choice of first person point of view to tell Annie's story is an excellent strategy for crafting her narrative. Because the main character is narrating or informing the readers what occurs to her, it also has the advantage of providing detailed information about the primary character.

Jamaica Kincaid- Novelist, essayist, gardener, and gardening writer Jamaica Kincaid is of Antiguan and American descent. She was born in Antigua's St. John's (part of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda). During the summers, she resides in North Bennington, Vermont (in the United States), and the academic year, she holds the position of Professor of African and African American Studies in Residence at Harvard University.

The two lines in this excerpt tht reflect those themes are:

"To make us wish that we were in his place. "

This line explains perfecty the mentality of “the grass is greener on the other side”. Because its explicitly saying "we" are wishing to be in someone else place, meaning people are never satisfied with their own situation; they always think others have it better.

"Went home and put a bullet through his head."
