Little changed in Napoleon's France from the theatre of the 1780s, which specialized in Neoclassical theater. Melodrama, which would come to dominate theatre in the 19th century, was first introduced through popular drama, as presented by what was known as "boulevard theatres." The romantic play was made possible by melodrama, which popularized deviations from Neoclassicism and attracted vast audiences.
