With checks and balances, each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. If there were no system of checks and balances the three branches or just one branch of government will become too strong and powerful resulting the next civil war or a small revolution. The checks and balances protect us from tyranny. If the president could not be impeached by congress, he could assume total power. If the congress could execute the law and have a police or military force, they would be able to ignore the veto power of the president.
