The United States, as one of the countries in better condition after the war, encouraged other Europeans nations to adopt democratic governments as one  of the criteria to get financial support  from them.

It is understandable why the United States opposed the totalitarian system of the Soviet Union ,which ended up becoming a dictatorship, as they were not only opposite in politics, but also in economical and social matters. Those two countries became opponents at Cold War.

The Cold War got its name because both sides were afraid of fighting each other directly.
