Coal demand skyrocketed throughout the Industrial Revolution and beyond, as it was required to power not only the factories that manufactured goods, but also the railroads and steamships that transported them.

Natural resources - Britain had large and accessible supplies of coal and iron - two of the most important raw materials used to produce the goods for the early Industrial Revolution.

That source was fossil fuels — coal, oil, and natural gas, though coal led the way — formed underground from the remains of much older plants and animals. When these fuels were burned, they released energy that had  originally from the Sun.
