By the Pythagorean Theorem, the length of x is

a^2 + b^2 = c^2                    Pythagorean Theorem
6^2 + b^2 = 10^2                 Substitute known variables
6^2 + b^2 - 10^2 = 0            Subtract 10^2 from each side
6^2 - 10^2 = b^2                  Subtract b^2 from each side
√6^2-10^2 = √b^2                Take square root of each side
8 = b                                     Simplify

So, the length of x is 8. I hope this helps!

If RT = 6 and RS = 9, then RX =<br> A - sqrt(54)<br> B - 13.5<br> C - 7.2<br> D - 4
wolverine [178]

Answer:

Option D RX=4 units

Step-by-step explanation:

we know that

<em>In the right triangle RTS</em>

The cosine of angle TRS is equal to

cos(TRS)=RT/RS

substitute

cos(TRS)=6/9 -----> equation A

<em>In the right triangle RTX</em>

The cosine of angle TRX is equal to

cos(TRX)=RX/RT

substitute

cos(TRX)=RX/6 -----> equation B

∠TRS=∠TRX -----> is the same angle

Match equation A and equation B

6/9=RX/6

RX=6*6/9=4 units

One leg of a right triangle is 7 inches longer than the smaller leg and the hypotenuse is 8 inches longer than the smaller leg.
Makovka662 [10]
Smaller leg = x
longer leg = y
hypotenuse = z

y=x+7
z=x+8

due to
{z}^{2}  =  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  \\ (x + 8) ^{2}  =  {x}^{2}  + (x + 7) ^{2}  \\  {x}^{2}  + 16x + 64 =  {x}^{2}  +  {x}^{2}  + 14x + 49 \\  {x}^{2}  + 16x + 64 = 2 {x}^{2}  + 14x + 49 \\  {x}^{2}  - 2 {x}^{2}  + 16x - 14x + 64 - 49 = 0 \\  -  {x}^{2}  + 2x + 15 = 0 \\  {x}^{2}  - 2x - 15 = 0 \:  \: (multiplied \: by \:  - 1) \\ (x - 5)(x + 3) = 0 \\ then \:  \: x = 5 \:  \: or \:  \: x =  - 3
but x cannot be -3
so smaller leg is 5 inches

then longer leg = 5+7 = 12 inches
and hypotenuse = 5+8 = 13 inches
