Being communist groups, the Viet Cong and the People's Army were not on the side of the United States. The Army of the Republic of Vietnam is the proper response. An organization called Viet Minh fought for Vietnam's independence from France.

South Vietnam and North Vietnam engaged in the second of the Indochina Wars. The Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies supported North Vietnam, while the United States and other anti-communist allies supported South Vietnam.

The U.S. and South Vietnamese governments depicted the Viet Cong during the war as a weapon of North Vietnam, in contrast to communist combatants and anti-war activists who said that the group was an insurgency native to the South. The Viet Cong and the communist government of North Vietnam were at war with South Vietnam and its main ally, the United States, in a protracted and expensive war known as the Vietnam War.
