The first thing for a nurse to do if an allergic reaction to a blood transfusion occurs is to stop the transfusion.

Stop the transfusion, placing the client in Fowler's position for shortness of breath and administering oxygen therapy immediately are the actions which must be taken.

Some individuals may have allergic reactions to blood transfusions even when the right blood type is given after it is given. A few symptoms may include itching, hives etc. which can be treated with antihistamines.

In a transfusion reaction, recipient's antibodies, immunoglobulin attach to donor red blood cells which leads to widespread clumping and destruction of recipient's RBCs.
