To write a good summary of any story, the following points should be remembered:

  • Read the story thoroughly and focus on its action. To write a good summary, you must understand the story yourself.
  • Try using fewer sentences. Express in your own words the gist of the story. Remember, brevity is the key.
  • Write a few sentences, in the beginning, focussing on the setting the story takes place.
  • Similarly, write a few sentences about the main characters/ protagonists of the story.
  • Devote more sentences to explaining the plot or action of the story, i.e, what happens in it.
  • In a summary, words such as "First", ... "Then", ... "Next", .... "Finally", can and should be used.
  • You might or might not look at the story from a critical perspective in the summary.

The lines "Take up our quarrel with the foe: / To you from failing hands we throw The torch;" supports the theme - the living carry on what the dead cannot. The torch signifies the living continuity of the cause they are fighting for. These lines give a challenge to the ones who are still living to not stop but keep going.
