Steffano Roi is the protagonist of the story. When he is navigating in the sea with his father, he sees a Colomber, a strange kind of fish. His father tries to protect his son from the shark alike animal and takes him away. Once the father has died, Stefano, as an adult, is still intrigued by that strange animal decides to confront the animal. Once he is there, the animal gives him a precious Pearl that gives power and good fortune to the one who possesses it.
