Convergent evolution refers to the independent evolution of certain similar features in species over a different period or epochs in time. This type of evolution creates analogous structures which have similar function or form but they were not present in the last common ancestor of the groups.

This can happen because, although these species do not survive in the same era, yet they may face the same climatic conditions like their ancestors. And thus they eventually try to adjust to these conditions and eventually have same characteristics.
