To use estimation to find the product of two decimals, you need to approximate (eliminate or round off) the decimals to have whole numbers, and then you can use the whole numbers to find their products.

What is estimation?

Estimation finds an estimate or approximation.

An approximation is a value, amount, or size closest to the true value found by rounding off.

Why is estimation necessary?

Estimation helps to ascertain where to place the decimals in the product for a reasonable answer.

For example:

3.9 x 4.75

Using estimation, we can round off the above as 4 x 5 = 20

This means that after multiplying 3.9 by 4.75, the value we obtain should be close to 20.

The product of 3.9 x 4.75 is 18.525, which is approaching 20.

The implication is that our product cannot be 1.8525, 185.25, or 1852.5.

Thus, estimation helps to ascertain if the product of two decimals is a reasonable answer.
