Mark Twain called the late 19th Century the "Gilded age" . So Mark Twain meant that the period was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath.

As a young man, Ben did own slaves. It wasn't until later in his life that he started to speak out against it. He even made anti slave packets. Hope this helped some :)
