Evidence #1: When African-Americans migrated to northern states, they were primarily looking for work. Evidence #2: The high wages drew African-Americans to Newark.

Many poor whites refused to be drafted to assist free people of color. Many of them were racist toward African-Americans. Following the Civil War, an influx of African-Americans from the South moved to Newark to work as unskilled laborers. Their children went to separate schools.

African Americans are Americans who have some or all of their ancestors from Sub-Saharan Africa.
