The Nixon administration attempt to halt the publication of the pentagon papers because revealed a long history of government lies that could further undermine public trust in government statements about the Vietnam War.

It was revealed in the Pentagon Papers that the United States administration had been deceiving the American public about the Vietnam war. Daniel Ellsberg was a military analyst who, in 1971, was responsible for leaking "The Pentagon Papers" to the American press. These documents contained top-secret material regarding the United States government's planning and decision-making in relation to the Vietnam War.

In May of 1972, individuals working on behalf of Richard Nixon and his reelection campaign were involved in a break-in. This was done as part of the efforts made by the Nixon administration to exert control over its political adversaries. They forced their way into the office of the Democratic National Committee, which was located in the Watergate complex of buildings in Washington, District of Columbia. The primary aspect of Nixon's involvement in the Watergate scandal was his efforts, along with those of members of his staff, to conceal what had taken place. In the end, the Watergate scandal was the cause of Richard Nixon's resignation as president. He stepped down so that he wouldn't have to face impeachment.
