According to pitch perception theory, different parts of the basilar membrane are sensitive to different frequencies. The base of the basilar membrane (near the oval window) is more sensitive to higher frequencies and the tip of the basilar membrane (near the top of the cochlea) is more sensitive to lower frequencies. Different frequencies are distinguished by the length and tension of the basal fibers. These properties depend on the strength of the fluid vibrations that stimulate the hair cells.

Pitch is the effect or sensation produced in the brain by sounds of specific frequencies. The pitch depends on the frequency of the oscillator. This means that the higher the pitch, the higher the frequency, and the lower the pitch, the lower the frequency.

The faster the sound wave vibrates, the higher the vibration. For example, on a guitar, large, heavy strings vibrate slowly to produce deep sounds and pitches. Thinner and lighter strings vibrate faster, producing higher notes or pitches. Pitch is determined by the frequency of vibration of the sound waves that generate it. High frequencies (880 Hz) are considered treble and low frequencies (55 Hz) are considered bass.
