The northern semiarid steppe between the Sahara desert and the tropical grassland is called the Sahel.

Sahel, Arabic Sahil, extending east from Senegal to Sudan, semi-arid regions of West and North-Central Africa. It forms a transition zone between the dry Sahara (desert) in the north and the humid savanna zone in the south. The term "Sahel" is borrowed from the Arabic name for the region, al-sāḥil. Sāḥil literally means "coast.

The population of the Sahara Desert is only 2 million. The people of the Sahara are primarily nomadic and move from place to place according to the seasons. Others live in permanent communities near water sources.
