A 16-year-old girl with a cardiac defect was diagnosed with scabies is the patients are most at risk for developing endocarditis.

Endocarditis is a life-threatening inflammation of the heart lumen and the lining of the valves. This lining is called the endocardium. Endocarditis is usually caused by an infection. Bacteria, fungi, or other bacteria enter the bloodstream and colonize damaged areas of the heart.

Endocarditis usually occurs when bacteria from elsewhere in the body travel through the blood and attach to damaged areas of the heart. People with damaged or prosthetic heart valves, or other heart conditions are most at risk.

Symptoms depend on the severity of the infection but may include fever, chills and fatigue.

The main treatment is antibiotics. You may need surgery.
