Eleven-month-old casey cried when his mother left him with his grandmother. However, when his mother came back, casey did not even look up at her. Casey most likely has an avoidant attachment style.

Avoidant attachment is an attachment style that children develop when their parents or primary caregivers do not show care or response after providing basic necessities such as food and housing. They neglect their own struggles and needs in order to keep their caregivers close. They still struggle, feel fear and sadness, but do so alone, denying the meaning of those feelings.

This attachment style often stays with a person for a long time can can have negative impact on romantic relationships, friendships, and other connections. Today, about 30% of people exhibit avoidant attachment patterns. People of all ages with avoidant attachment styles can exhibit signs of depression and anxiety. Children of avoidant parents or caregivers may not express their need for affection or care.
