Cytokines trigger endothelial cells to express specific receptors called selectins, which bind to carbohydrates on the surface of neutrophils.

Cytokines are the proteinaceous structures predominant in cell signaling. They also regulate the growth of immune cells and blood cells. They can also occur in the form of glycoproteins. The example of cytokines are interleukins, interferons, chemokines and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF).

Selectins are the transmembrane proteins that span the lipid bilayer only once. They belong to the family Cell Adhesion Molecules. They perform role in processes like  inflammation, lymphocyte homing, immunological responses, etc. They are localized on the membranes of endothelial cells, leukocytes and platelets.

What role do photosynthesis and respiration play in the distribution of gases in seawater?
nydimaria [60]

Answer and explanation;

-The most important life processes in the oceans or sea water are photosynthesis and respiration. Photosynthesis by plants and  other lower organisms uses sunlight to convert CO2 and H2O to a carbohydrate compound; O2 is a by-product of that reaction. Respiration is the process that all organisms use to recover the chemical energy stored in organic compounds. O2 is used to oxidize organic matter and release chemical energy; CO2 and H2O are by-products.

-The rates of photosynthesis and respiration are nearly balanced.all of the organic matter produced by photosynthetic algae is respired by consumer and decomposing organisms.
