The new black codes were restricted laws to African Americans that were passed by Southern states after the Civil War in 1865 and 1866 to ensure a cheap labor force and white supremacy because slavery had been removed.

Answer:

  • Marry by law. (Only between African Americans, a marriage between a "white" person and an African American was not valid).
  • Swear out affidavits in criminal cases.
  • Go to school (In some states they could study but on separate schools).
  • Testify as witnesses during a trial (never against a white man)
  • Sue or be sued in civil courts (they had limited access to separate courts).
