The characteristic that helps distinguish deuterostomes from protostomes is (a) embryological origin of the mouth from blastopore.

Deuterostomes are the organisms in which the mouth develops from the opening other than the blastopore (the first opening). In deuterostomes the anus forms from the blastopore. The example of deuterostomes is: vertebrates (and thus humans), sea stars, and crinoids.

Protostomes are the organisms in which the mouth develops from the blastopore. Their anus is formed after the formation of mouth. Examples are:  arthropods, molluscs, annelids, flatworms and nematodes. Both protostomes and deuterostomes have a common ancestor called Ediacaran, a worm-like aquatic animal.

Selective breeding of plant and animals that exhibit high resistance to disease.

Explanation:

Selective breeding or artificial selection is the process in which two individuals with beneficial traits are crossed to have the desired phenotype in progeny. It uses the process of natural selection in its process.

These are beneficial in the  improvement of crops and yields of animals. New plant and animal can be created. This is  a form of genetic engineering.

The breeding process does not cause harm to the breeding organisms.

examples of plant selective breeding: broccoli and brussels sprout.

animal selective breeding: large milk yielding cows.
