The place theory explains that hearing high & low tones depends upon which area of the cochlea is most strongly stimulated.

What is place theory?

How we recognize high-pitched noises with a frequency higher than 5,000 hertz is explained by the place theory of hearing.

According to place theory of hearing, people can hear different pitches due to distinct sound frequencies creating vibrations in specific areas of the basilar membrane of the cochlea. In other words, certain frequencies will stimulate various sections of the cochlea.

The basilar membrane has distinct characteristic frequencies at each place. A sound of 6,000 hertz, for instance, would excite the area of the basilar membrane that has a 6,000 hertz characteristic frequency. Based on the location of the hair cells that transmitted the neural signal, the brain determines the pitch.
