The client's potassium level is too low (normal should be 3.5 to 5). The consumption of a thiazide diuretic often results in a loss of potassium, therefore a potassium supplement needs to be prescribed to restore a normal serum potassium level.

The Diuretics are used to decrease blood pressure as well as to decrease manifestation of fluid excess such as edema.

The thiazide diuretics also indicates the use for nephrolithiasis, osteoporosis, and diabetes insipidus.

They are frequently used in combination with other antihypertensive agents to reduce a patient’s blood pressure.

It is so because no other action for restoring a normal serum potassium level can be used here. The thiazide diuretics encourages natriuresis and diuresis. Three thiazide diuretics are commonly used: hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, and indapamide.
