This excerpt is taken from Thucydides: Pericles' Funeral Oration. Funeral oration is the formal speech given on someone's funeral. Shortly after the Peloponnesian War had broken out, Pericles delivered his funeral oration to commemorate those troops who had already fallen in battle.

In his speech, Pericles states that he had been emphasizing the greatness of Athens so as to convey that the people of Athens should still support the war, to point out them that what they were fighting for was of the utmost importance.
