In terms of chemistry, matter can be defined as anything that occupies space and has mass. The matter is made up of very small particles called atoms. Matter exists in three states that are as follows:
1. Solid
The solid matter has a definite shape and volume. For example, IceCube, pencil, etc
2. Liquid
The liquids possess a definite volume but not a definite shape. They can be molded in any form in which they are poured. Water, juice, and lava are some examples of liquid.
3. Gas
The gases neither have a definite shape nor volume. They occupy the whole contained in which they are stored. Chlorine, oxygen, hydrogen, etc., are some examples of gases.
Anything in the universe that we can smell, touch, see, taste, or hear is made up of matter. For instance, we need a pen and paper to write something down. Pen and paper occupy space and have mass, thus they are matter. Air, fire, and water all can be termed as matter.
