The U.S Constitution rest on seven basic principles, these principles are popular sovereignty, limited government, separation of powers, federalism, checks and balances, republicanism, and individual rights.

What do these principles mean?

  • Popular Sovereignty : This refers to the fact that the government gets it's powers from the authority of the people. This principle, states that the people have the right to change their government.
  • Limited Government :  In a limited government,  the government has only the powers that the Constitution bestows on it. Members of the government and the governed are not above the law. the constitution is supreme.
  • Separation of Powers: There is also separation of power, the congress, which makes the laws, the executive, which carries out the laws and the judiciary, which interprets the laws.
  • Checks and Balances: This system  helps to safe­guard against abuse of power. The various branches of government have the power to check, or limit, the actions of the other two.
  • Federalism: This refers to the principle of or division of power between the federal government and the states. The federal government has the power to coin money, declare war, and regulate trade between the states. States make rules for state elections, and establish schools.
  • Republicanism: This refers to the provision in the  Constitution whereby citizens can elect their representatives in Congress.
  • Individual Rights: The Constitution protects individual rights, such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to trial by jury.
